Design Cycle Learning x Community Action: Meet the Makers in Grade 1

What happens when you mash up Design Cycle Learning x Integrated Unit x Service Learning —> you get a student-designed and built Free Little Food Pantry to help meet the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal #2: Zero Hunger. When first graders noticed that the food pantry they donate to was only open one day a week, they wondered what happened when people needed food at different times. How can we get to Zero Hunger just one day per week? They came up with a solution to this problem: creating a Free Little Food Pantry that could be accessible at all times. After researching pantries throughout the community, they designed their own, built prototypes and will soon begin construction on the real thing to deliver to our neighboring pantry.

This is what’s so impactful about the intersection of these different modes of study — when you bring them all together, they result in real world problem solving and real community engagement. Way to go First Grade!!
