Second Grade Garbage Barge Engineers

So impressed with our second grade engineers!👏 Not because their garbage barge models were instantly successful (they weren’t! boat physics are tricky! big garbage is a big problem!) but because of how well they were able to engage in their design cycle learning and the process of design-build-test-revise to keep experimenting and innovating.

Based on their research into UN Sustainable Development Goal #6, second graders know that a functioning sanitation system is essential to the world we want to live in, and they’ve learned that much of the trash produced in the NY metro area has to be transported via water and barges. Trying their hand at a challenge to transport a heavy load of trash over water illustrated just how difficult it can be! It turns out, it takes a lot of work to create systems to transport garbage. Curious to see what kinds of solutions these second graders will come up with to solve this problem. Bigger barges? Or maybe less garbage?
